Theory and practice
… I pondered: what am I going to do with berries of Wild Siberian Sea buckthorn: eat with honey, make jam, make juice, add to vodka or…? What if, after all the culinary delights, I use a few remaining berries as seeds and plant them? Having never been engaged in planting, I took up the matter with eagerness and enthusiasm of a person who does not know all the nuances, therefore does not envision any difficulties. For starters, I wrote a letter to the presenter of those berries: "Can you please advise how to plant them?" I received a laconic reply: "Crush the berries, dry the seeds and plant". Easy! So I crushed and dried them. "But how do I plant them?" – I asked for the second time. I got an even more stingy answer: "Do not forget to stratify". Do what?! Then an old friend of mine gave me a straightforward advice: "Look on the Internet". That’s a good start! So I open the all-knowing Internet and find a few scant articles of specialists for specialists, and start experimenting. I lightly wet the prewashed under tap water and after dried sand, mixed it with the seeds (so how will I find them in the sand???), poured that mix into a jar from some dessert, covered it with gauze on top (personal decision ?), and placed it in the lower compartment of the «Deli Center» refrigerator. In my daily planner I marked that once a week it is necessary to stir the sand, and after about six weeks the seeds can be planted. So, let the stratification begin! ? I would like to say a couple of words about my beloved self. When Russia decided to build an open economy in the late XX century, without regret it freed a perspective hydrogeologist, who by that time almost finished writing his thesis and was building a young family of his own despite all rules of survival. After being sad, but not too much, and for not too long, and most importantly having felt the taste of freedom, I defined my reality as inability to return to government institutions for work, where decision-making was based on everything, except for objective expediency, and what mattered the most, didn’t depend on my opinion. The same goes out to commercial structures where I’m not a shareholder with the defining voice. A couple of attempts to refute this axiom only confirmed the selection of youth. Without being too thoughtful towars choosing business profiles, but always attempting personal preferences with economic efficiency, I grew several successful businesses with earning an international title of a «Serial entrepreneur». With time, I have gained the ability to choose to do businesses that were close to my heart or those that provoked me to be stronger. For example, I never thought that I’d be doing agriculture, although one of my grandmothers was a farmer and I was born on a warm sunny day in a picturesque village. But a little less than ten years ago, several farmers attended my seminar on business development, and after that… I got into a whirlind in Russia, working between Canada and Russia… It wasn’t long ago that I have exited those projects, and thought that it would be a long time before I revisit the field. But an old friend of mine, during a Fall Sunday lunch of last year, presented me with wild Siberian buckthorn berries. Why that present? I pondered: what am I going to do with them: eat with honey, make jam, make juice, add to vodka or…? Where shall I begin?... I guess with the fact that yesterday my eldest daughter rebuked: «I am surprised that you didn’t publish your blog on sea buckthorn on GreenOffOn yet!» And later added: «After photos of your buckthorn were published http://greenoffon.com/green_gallery/19010, I was bombarded by requests to purchase them!» Children are the flowers of our life and sometimes send the right messages to us. That is why on a Sunday afternoon, I poured myself a glass of delicious mineral water that I went to get in Perth, a very lovely town in Ontario, which I wrote about in previous blogs (thank you to an anonymous kind person who made a well for everyone who would like clean water without chloride!), put on my favourite experimental production of Pink Floyd’s «Wish You Were Here» unreleased tracks, turned on my laptop, and… whoever is interested in learning how to grow Wild Siberian Sea buckthorn in Canada and to create an effective business (as I hope to do with mine!) from a hobby, can start following my blog which is fully and primarily will be posted under my profile on an interesting, useful, and an in-demand by progressive humanity portal http://greenoffon.com for the global Eco Social Community (using this as an opportunity, I would like to invite all my socially responsible and «green» friends and acquaintances to join the Community), and shorter versions will be later posted on some social networks.
For the convenience of readers I will try to publish my blogs in two languages: English and Russian.
Friendly and constructive comments and suggestions will be welcomed and will be responded to? I love to communicate with interesting people! Unfriendly and destructive attacks (oh, the diversity of the Internet!) will be ignored as for me the authors of those comments simply do not exist. So, a little bit about the «Dilettante»… To be continued here: http://greenoffon.com/member_profile/31327 Always open to kind people, Konstantin Yurievich http://greenoffon.com/blog_page/19078

Canada’s Approval of GM Fish Eggs Threatens Environment / PETITION AGAINST GM SALMON PRODUCTION
To: Hon. Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment Re: Please Stop Genetically Modified Salmon Date: Monday 02 December 2013 Cc: Hon. Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Cc: Robert Chisholm, NDP Fisheries Critic Cc: Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Liberal Party Fisheries Critic Cc: Elizabeth May, Green Party Leader Cc: Megan Leslie, NDP Environment Critic Cc: Hon. John McKay, Liberal Environment Critic Cc: André Bellavance, Bloc Québécois Dear Minister Aglukkaq,
I am writing to express my opposition to your decision to allow the production of genetically modified (GM) fish eggs in Prince Edward Island.
The small U.S. company AquaBounty wants to send all of its GM Atlantic salmon eggs from Prince Edward Island to Panama for growing out and processing, to send the fish into the US consumer market. This plan is extremely risky for Canada and the rest of the world.
Its unacceptable that the entire process for assessing the environmental risk was secret and that the public had no chance to be involved or consulted.
Canada has an international responsibility to stop this living pollution. Please reverse this decision and make sure that Environment Canada does not approve the production of GM salmon or any other GM fish in Canada. The risk to Atlantic salmon and our environment is too great.
I urge you to take immediate action to stop GM salmon in order to protect endangered wild Atlantic salmon.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent issue.
Sincerely, Konstantin Smolentsev @GreenOffOn http://greenoffon.com |
